Maintaining a venue for traditional South Georgia quail hunts is a passionate and purposeful endeavor. Assisted by his wife, son and daughter-in-law as well as a crack team of staffers, Doug Coe has owned and managed Pine Hill Plantation for nearly 20 years. What’s in store for visitors to this famous “quail belt” institution? Coe has provided some interesting details that help answer that question.
Quick Facts
1. Pine Hill Plantation was founded in 1990 and has been owned and operated by the Coe family since 2003.
2. Bobwhite quail are the only birds hunted at PHP, and they are hunted exclusively from horseback and mule-drawn wagons.
3. Each Guest group enjoys its own unique lodge that comes with a Hospitality Assistant, a personal Chef and private dining arrangements.
4. The individual lodges vary in size and welcome hunting parties ranging from 4 to 24.
Did You Know?
Pine Hill Plantation comprises more than 5,000 acres of longleaf pine timber with wiregrass understory—prime native habitat for quail since before the first European settlers arrived. The operation boasts 18 guides, 11 retrieving dogs, more than 100 English pointers, 31 horses and 16 mules. On peak days as many as six mule-drawn wagons—each with a wagon driver plus a Huntmaster and an Assistant Huntmaster on horseback—carry hunting parties into the field.
From its hunting options to its hospitality, Pine Hill Plantation offers the most personal, authentic and historically traditional South Georgia quail hunting experience possible. Upon assuming ownership of PHP, Doug Coe made the decision to operate the property much like a private plantation—where each group has its own exclusive lodge complete with a chef and house staff and meal options such as fried or baked stuffed quail, bone-in rib eye and rack of lamb.
The four lodges that the Coe family built feature architecture reminiscent of the bygone era of South Georgia quail hunting and range in size from 3,500 to 13,000 square feet. The plantation promises a private and personal experience to all and has hosted Fortune 500 CEOs, popular musicians and professional athletes.
For the 13 years prior to purchasing Pine Hill Plantation, Doug Coe was a frequent Guest at PHP.
What Do Guests Say?
